The year 2021 will witness another adaptation of the manga into a live-action film. The release of Rurouni Kenshin: The Final will be the fourth entry in the series after Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends. It is based on the last part of the Rurouni Kenshin manga, written by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The director of the film is Keishi Ōtomo.
Live action movies based on manga are not very popular in the world, the main reason being the language barrier. Still, fans who follow the manga world with enthusiasm have praised these adaptations. These films are as thrilling as the Hollywood comedy adaptations of DC and Marvel.
What do we know about the Rurouni Kenshin series?
The Rurouni Kenshin series is a Japanese film adaptation of a manga of the same name. Falling into the category of period action-adventure films, the series includes five releases. Rurouni Kenshin: Origins was released on August 25, 2012. It turned out to be over $ 36 million gross in Japan itself and over $ 60 million worldwide.
The film received immense responses from all over the world. More than 60 countries have acquired the distribution license in Asia, Europe and Latin America.
The sequels of Rurouni Kenshin: Origins
The next two sequels were Kyoto Inferno and The Legend Ends. Both were released in the summer of 2014. There was a subsequent announcement in 2016 on film rights. Funimation Films acquired the rights to the first film and sequels. As a result, the films were released with English dubbing in North America in August 2016.
The films have been released at various film festivals like the Busan International Film Festival and the Sitges Film Festival.
In 2019, Warner Bros. Japan announced the production of the fourth and fifth sequels. It was originally slated for release in the summer of 2020. But, due to the pandemic, publication has been postponed. Later on December 4, 2020, a new poster and revised release date were announced on the official website.

Initially, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final was due out in the summer of 2020. But, the pandemic has forced producers to delay the release date for a while. Another announcement was made in December 2020, with a new poster for the film. The final version of Rurouni Kenshin: The Final is scheduled for April 23, 2021.
Story Overview: The Rurouni Kenshin Series
He is a legendary Battousai killer, who disappears after his victory in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. He turns his back on the bloodshed and chooses to be a wandering swordsman. He continues with the name Himura Kenshin and works to save the people of Japan without killing anyone else. The story is a representation of love, peace, and atonement. Following all the murders he has committed, he promises to help those in need. Later in his life, he meets Kamiya Kaoru. She attacks him, believing him to be the famous assassin, but he reveals that he only carries an “inverted blade sword” and not the one Battousai once had.
Kaoru later fights with a murderer, where Kenshin arrives and saves her, giving the murderer the opportunity to recognize him, the real Battousai. The story takes a critical turn, making Kenshin aware of his horrors and his vow not to kill anyone. The murderer kidnaps Kaoru. Kenshin then fights first and saves his sweetheart, keeping his wish intact. Since Kenshin lets the murderer die, he tries to kill himself.
Kyoto Inferno plots and the legend dies
In the sequel Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, Kenshin lives with Kaoru and his student when a government official calls him to find Shishio Makoto, who is terrorizing Kyoto and its inhabitants. The story then revolves around Kenshin on how he helps Kyoto and uses the twin pair of his sakabato to fight enemies.
Although he can assess Shishio’s true intentions, Kenshin fails to stop him. The story ends with a climax where Kenshin is found unconscious on a beach and carried away by a mysterious man.
The third film, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, describes Kenshin’s journey, finding the missing part of his soul as he vows never to kill anyone. He finishes his training and finds out that Shishio has issued an arrest warrant against him. Therefore, Kenshin takes a secret route to his home. Towards the end of a huge battle with Kenshin and his allies, Shishio catches fire and burns alive. Since then, Kenshin has been recognized as Kenshin, and this turns out to be the end of his life as Battousai.
Rurouni Kenshin casts: the final
The cast of the famous manga adaptation Rurouni Kenshin has always been talked about. The list of cast and crew is a big topic to discuss. In Rurouni Kenshin: The Finale, Takeru Satoh stars as Himura Kenshin, with Emi Takei as Kamiya Kaoru. Munetaka Aoki will play the role of Sagara Sanosuke and Yū Aoi will be seen as Takani Megumi. Mackenyu as Yukishiro Enishi and Yōsuke Eguchi as Saitō Hajime will be part of this film.
